Russia quake victims set up home in their garages

Since an earthquake shook this Russian town on Sakhalin Island in the Pacific Ocean, Ivan Popov has been living in a garage.
The crude shack feels much safer than the town's Soviet-built apartment blocks, many of which crumpled in the quake. "I don't ever want to live in an apartment again," the former sailor said.

5.5 quake hits Kuril Islands

A moderate earthquake with the magnitude of 5.5 has struck the coast of the Kuril Islands on Russia's far eastern region, near Japan.
The earthquake occurred 177 kilometers southwest of Severo-Kurilsk, a small town with a population of 2,592 on the northern part of the Kuril Islands, on Tuesday at 1:16 p.m. local time.

UK Oil Firms Cheating Investors, Says Russia

Russia stepped up the pressure on British-listed energy and mining companies yesterday with an influential Moscow regulator alleging that some of them were "cheating" investors by exaggerating their reserves.
Oleg Mitvol, deputy head of the environmental watchdog Rosprirodnadzor, called on the London Stock Exchange and other authorities in the UK to stamp out the alleged abuses.

Russian regulator uncovers new violations in Sakhalin II project

Russia's environmental regulator said Friday it had found new legal violations committed by Gazprom-controlled Sakhalin Energy, which operates the Sakhalin II oil and gas project off the country's Pacific Coast.
