Japan’s energy official leaves for Moscow for talks with Gazprom

The head of the Japanese Natural Resources and Energy Agency, Harufumi Mochizuki, has left for Moscow to meet with Gazprom management to discuss fuel supplies to Far Eastern markets.

It is still unknown who will represent Gazprom at the talks, a Japanese agency's official told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. Last March Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller conducted the talks.

The Japanese authorities plan to start a full-scale energy dialogue with the Russian government and business representatives and seek regular consultations with Gazprom, well-informed sources said.

Mochizuki's visit is timed to coincide with the first round of Russian-Japanese strategic dialogue in Moscow between Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Denisov and his Japanese counterpart Shotaro Yachi.

Tokyo pays special attention to consultations with Gazprom taking into account the gas giant's increased role in exploration and development of Sakhalin Island's natural resources that are of strategic importance for Japan's energy security.

Last year Gazprom bought control (50 percent plus one share) in the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project from Royal Dutch Shell and its Japanese partners - Mitsui and Mitsubishi.

Japanese energy companies have already sealed long-term contracts on supply of liquefied natural gas from Sakhalin-2 and Tokyo is interested in maximally stable supplies.

The Russian gas monopoly already has an agreement with the Japanese Natural Resources and Energy Agency, Kazinform quotes Itar-Tass.
