Program of resettlement of former Sakhalin residents drafted

A program of voluntary resettlement to Sakhalin of its former residents who went abroad has been drafted in the island.

Over the three coming years, it is planned to attract more than 5,000 people to Sakhalin and Kuriles. There are vacancies for them of doctors, teachers and other specialists in the islands. Chief of the Federal Migration Service Department for the Sakhalin Region Olga Savchenko said about it on Monday.

The program of voluntary resettlement to the historic native land of former Sakhalin residents has been submitted for federal authorities' approval. It is planned that already this year the island will be able to receive over 1,000 people.

At the same time, some 4,500 Koreans dream about leaving Sakhalin for the native land of their ancestors. From 1939 to 1945, when the south of Sakhalin was under Japan's administration, about 40,000 citizens of Korea were brought to the island in accordance with the forced labour mobilization.

Right after the end of the Second World War, only some of them managed to return to the Korean Peninsula. At present the Korean diaspora in Sakhalin numbers almost 30,000 people.
