Emergencies Ministry: No tsunami threat for Kuriles

There is no tsunami threat for the Kurile Islands from the earthquake in the Pacific, an officer on duty at the Russian Emergencies Ministry told Itar-Tass.

The officer said the tsunami alert was canceled.

Underground tremours measuring 3.0 were felt in Yuzhno-Kurilsk and measuring 4.0 in Kurilsk. People were warned beforehand, and they left their homes, the source said.

After the alert was canceled, they could return home.

According to reports from Khabarovsk, people in three regions, Kurilsky, Severokurilsky and Yuzhnokurilsky, were evacuated to safe places.

The supposed time for the wave to reach the islands has passed, and the sea level did not rise near the coast, an officer on duty at the Emergencies Ministry's Sakhalin regional department told Itar-Tass. The situation is being monitored, the source added.

The powerful eight-point-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Pacific 180 kilometres east of Simushir caused a tsunami wave. The decision to evacuate people was taken immediately after the reports of seismological services about the quake.
