Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service on Sakhalin resumed

The operation of the ferry service between the mainland and Sakhalin Island has been resumed after a three-day inaction period due to a storm in the Tatar Strait.

The Sakhalin-9 diesel-electric vessel was the first to depart on the route Vanino-Kholmsk on Tuesday.

The ferry service administration told Itar-Tass, "The departure of another two ferryboats with cargoes and passengers on board is planned during the day."

Waves at sea are still rather high, but the wind is gradually subsiding and weather improving. Over 120 carriages and 100 heavy-duty trucks have accumulated at ports in the mainland and on Sakhalin during the inactivity days. According to specialists of Vanino seaport responsible for passenger transportation, "No earlier than tomorrow it will be possible to transport to Sakhalin all passengers that awaiting the departure have had to spend several days at Vanino during storm."

Four ferryboats were sheltering from the storm in the Sovetskaya Gavan and Vanino bays from January 6.
