Cyclone leaving Sakhalin, air traffic resumed

The powerful snowy cyclone formed over Sakhalin two days ago is slowly leaving the island for Kamchatka and the Pacific Ocean.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk's airport has resumed working. Planes land and take off there again.

More than 20 flights from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to various Russian cities and abroad were delayed during the two days. Two passenger airliners from Moscow on the flights to Sakhalin landed at Khabarovsk and Vladivostok and waited for the weather to calm down on the island.

The runway is cleared of snow. Passengers take their flights, the airport press service said.

The ferry service between Vanino and Kholmsk has been resumed. Four diesel vessels have come to the line. Each is capable to carry 100 passengers and 26 loaded railroad cars. The ferry work resumption means that 400 Sakhalin residents will be in time to reach Kholmsk before the holiday and will greet the New Year together with their relatives.

Only one serious incident was reported when the cyclone raged on Sakhalin. The fishing vessel Sofia was thrown on rocks on the island's western coast. All the crewmembers, 12 people, were rescued.
