Russia has said India will participate in exploration and production of crude and gas in the Sakhalin-3 field. India will have a privilege of taking part in the exploration and production of crude and natural gas from the Sakhalin-3 field, said Vyscheslav Trubnikov, Russia's envoy to India.

He said Russia's deputy prime minister who is scheduled to visit India Dec. 7 would discuss with Indian authorities the issue of New Delhi's participation. The comments came at a gathering organized to mark the handing over of crude oil produced from Sakhalin-I to India.

State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Videsh is an equity partner in the project. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. will refine this crude oil at its refinery at Mangalore, The Hindu newspaper reported Monday.

Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora meanwhile was tight-lipped about whether India would back out of its role in Sakhalin-2.

It is safe not to comment on an internal thing, he said. "I don't think we have any chance to talk about Sakhalin-II just now.
