A jury in Russia's Far East on Friday found three men guilty of a firebomb attack that killed a coast guard general and badly injured his wife, a news agency reported.

Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gamov, who was in charge of coast guard in the Russian Far East, died from his burns in a Japanese hospital after attackers threw gasoline bombs through the windows of his apartment on Sakhalin Island in May 2002.

A jury in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the provincial capital of the far eastern Sakhalin Island, ruled that the three defendants were guilty of deadly arson, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

The three men were arrested last year and have remained in custody.

Officials have blamed Gamov's killing on Russian criminals involved in the Pacific coast fishing trade, and said he was killed in revenge for his efforts to fight poachers who sell their catch to Japan, South Korea and China.
