Restoration and repair efforts begins on Kuriles after strong cyclone

Hurricane winds have destroyed roofs of houses to a total of over 3,000 square metres of roofing slate, broken 130 square metres of window glasses and broke a gym wall on the Iturup Island of the Kuriles chain. The wind force reached 46 metres per second.

According to the head of the civil defence and emergencies department of the Kurilsk district, Oleg Sakhanenko, the city of Kurilsk and Reidovo settlement have been the worst hit on the island.

Restoration and repair efforts were launched on Iturup on Tuesday. It is necessary to repair roofs and 900 roofing slates are required but only 300 slates are available now on the island. It has been decided to put tar paper on roofs so far.

On Tuesday, the cyclone moved to the north of the Sakhalin Island and caused damage there.

According to head of the Uglegorsk district civil defence and emergencies department Vyacheslav Kazeyev, the miners' settlement Boshnyakovo, settlements of Orlovo, Olshanka and Porechye have been totally cut off from electricity supply. There are over 3,000 residents in the settlements.

Hurricane winds that swept the district on the night from November 12 to 13 in many areas tore wires of power transmission lines. On Tuesday, experts have been looking for ruptures and repairing the lines. Electric power supply has been restored in the settlements of Chapayevo, Pravda, Chekhov and Pyatirechye in the Kholmsk district.

The cyclone that moved to the Sakhalin's north on Tuesday made it possible to open the Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service. The first specialised diesel-electric vessel Sakhalin-1 departed from Vanino for the Sakhalin Island on Tuesday. It carries 26 railway cars with cargoes and 100 passengers.
