The oil output was begun at the Orlan sea platform on Sakhalin on Monday.

The extraction from the bottom of the Sea of Okhotsk is yet experimental, but the platform is to begin to operate at full capacity by the end of the year, an official of the regional natural resources committee told ITAR-TASS.

Orlan is a part of the Sakhalin-1 project.

Apart from this platform, oil is extracted at the Yastreb coat facility.

Both platforms are to produce a full-scale 250,000 barrels a day (over 30,000 tons) by the end of the year.

Oil is also extracted in the Sea of Okhotsk under the Sakhalin-2 project from the Molipak platform.

The oil output is expected to reach 6 million tones this year, as against 4 million tons in 2005, the natural resources committee said.

Sakhalin-1 is a project of developing northwestern Sakhalin offshore deposits (Chaivo, Odoptu, Arkutun-Dagi).

Their reserves there are an estimated 307 million tons of oil and 485 billion cubic meters gas.

The Piltun-Astokh and Lunskoye deposits are developed under the Sakhalin-2 project. Their charted reserves are 140 million tons of oil and 408 billion cubic metres of gas,

The operator of Sakhalin-2 is the international company Sakhalin Energy.
