Sinopec gets down to business on Sakhalin shelf

China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation Sinopec has engaged in Sakhalin 3 oil and gas project. It will drill an appraisal well in the Sea of Okhotsk together with Russian partners.

On Sunday Sinopec received a building for its Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk office.

The well will be drilled starting from mid-summer, office head Liu Yangshan told Itar-Tass. He said they would be using the Kangtang sea platform built in Shanghai in 1984. The platform, which has drilled about 100 holes on the shelf of various countries, will bore a 3,500-meter hole in Sakhalin. Chinese experts are making estimations on the future drilling site in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Sakhalin 3 oil reserves are estimated at over 800 million tonnes, while gas reserves exceed 900 billion cubic meters.

The Legend rig of the U.K.-based Transocean will also drill an appraisal hole on the Sakhalin shelf.
