Russian firms to build underwater cable to Sakhalin Island

MTS announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with VimpelCom, MegaFon and Rostelecom jointly to lay and operate an submarine fibre-optic cable joining the Russian Far East with Sakhalin Island.

The project, called Sakhalin-Magadan-Kamchatka, will kick off in late 2012. According to preliminary estimates, the total cost of the project will be RUB 2.4 billion and will be split evenly among the four operators.

The new line will connect the town of Okha on Sakhalin Island with the mainland towns of Magadan and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The capacity of the submarine cable will amount to 8 Tbs with the total length of lines around two thousand kilometers.

The group expects to complete construction in two years' time.
