Surveying for oil, gas near Sakhalin ends

One round of surveying for oil and gas near Sakhalin and Kamchatka in Russia is complete.

Sakhalin Island-based company Dalmorneftegeophysics and Norwegian PGS Asia Pacific Co. said seismic prospecting for oil and gas deposits on the shelves of Sakhalin Island and the Kamchatka Peninsula has been completed. Three geophysical exploration vessels were exploring for hydrocarbon deposits.

DMNG General Director Eduard Kropp said since the exploration of the shelves of Sakhalin and Kamchatka, geophysicists have been busy compiling geological maps, from which oilmen will determine points for the drilling of exploratory wells. Drilling is expected to be done by summer 2008.

The geophysical vessels Orient Explorer, Ramford Victory, and the Zephyr-1, which conducted seismic survey off Sakhalin and Kamchatka, will head to Indonesia and Australia to do prospecting for hydrocarbon fuel deposits on the shelves of those countries. The vessels are towing special-purpose devices that probe into the seabed subsoil and produce a map of oil deposits.

The geophysical research fleet has previously helped locate hydrocarbon fuel deposits for development under the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects.
