Gazprom to get half of posts at Sakhalin Energy

SEIC

Russian gas giant Gazprom will gain control of half of the senior management positions at Sakhalin Energy, the operator of the Sakhalin II project, by the end of 2008.

Sakhalin Energy CEO Ian Craig said that in the coming year a partial, gradual change in personnel will occur at the level of executive directors and other management positions, from those nominated by Shell to those nominated by Gazprom, Interfax reported.

Gazprom has already named two executive directors at Sakhalin Energy, including Craig's deputy, Andrei Galaev, Craig said at the Oil and Gas of Sakhalin conference in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on September 4. The other deputy executive director is Igor Ignatiev, who is in charge of external economic ties.

Craig will remain in his post until the first shipment of LNG is made under the Sakhalin-2 project, in line with a decision by shareholders.

With Gazprom as the chief shareholder, the consortium will be able to benefit from its formidable experience and know-how acquired over the years in operations in Russia and abroad and in the construction and launch of pipelines, Craig said.

Sakhalin Energy has already benefited from Gazprom's support in preparing a slate of environmental measures and agreements with a host of Russian ministries and agencies concerning LNG deliveries. Sakhalin is a world-class oil and gas centre, where 80 percent of reserves are still awaiting development. Maintaining and increasing the experience and know-how gained in the Sakhalin I and Sakhalin II projects will serve as a key priority for the Sakhalin region, he said.
