5.5 quake hits Kuril Islands

A moderate earthquake with the magnitude of 5.5 has struck the coast of the Kuril Islands on Russia's far eastern region, near Japan.

The earthquake occurred 177 kilometers southwest of Severo-Kurilsk, a small town with a population of 2,592 on the northern part of the Kuril Islands, on Tuesday at 1:16 p.m. local time.

There were no reports of casualties or damages.

The Kuril Islands in Russia's Sakhalin Oblast region, are a volcanic island archipelago that stretches approximately 1,300 km northeast from Hokkaido, Japan, to Kamchatka, Russia. They separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific Ocean.

There are 56 islands in total and many more minor rocks. It is held by Russia but also claimed by Japan.
